Essay 5 A Hungry World(Spring Semester, Final draft)
A Hungry World and What Should We Do For Food Problem
“A hungry world” this word is very important word in our world. Now, the world has 7 billion people, but 1billion people suffer from lacking food. There are more hungry people in the world than the population of the United States. Food is necessary for our life. So, food poverty is a very deep problem. Food poverty is caused by depleted soil, drought for an extended period without rain, extreme weather, war, insects, and so on.
Many countries suffer from lacking of food. The following examples are some of the typical objections. First, high poverty rate and malnutrition are common in Bangladesh. About 60 million people who live in Bangladesh do not have adequate food. Second, in West Africa, cocoa producers have one of the world’s highest poverty rates. The others, India, Bolivia, Haiti and so on. Many people think that developing countries only have good poverty, but, not only developing countries but also developed countries have food poverty. In America, 13.5 million people have low incomes, and suffer from lacking of food.
I take it up about two countries. The first is Bangladesh. This place is high levels of poverty and food insecurity, because of storms and flood that affected more than 1.5 million people in summer 2011. Woman who is a victim of this disaster said “The flood has washed away all our happiness.” The damage of flood is very big and terrible. Bangladesh has other disaster including droughts, storm surges, and cyclones, because Bangladesh is a low-lying country, so this country tends to undergo influence of climate change. In, August of 2011, 57000 people had been flooded by effect of monsoons. But the people of Bangladesh can overwhelm to receive damages. For example, rice farmers, it is that absorbing more water. Rice plants need a wet environment. So, rice farmers kept their field. The people of Bangladesh cope with floods in a variety of ways. They have learned that adaptation are the keys to raising food on their constantly changing land.
The second is Côte d’Ivoire. Côte d’Ivoire is the world’s leading producer of cocoa, but this country is one of the world’s twenty poorest countries in the world. The global chocolate industry is worth billions of dollars, but yields of the cocoa farmers are very small. These yields have decreased significantly. So, many poor farmers cannot afford to educate their family members. More than 1.8 million children have been involved in growing cocoa, and not going to school.
Now many farmers are not sure of how to increase yields of cocoa, or combat diseases that attack their cocoa crops. We should teach these skill. For example, First, The world Cocoa Foundation trains farmers to improve the quality of cocoa, efficiently in growing cocoa, and business skills. Second, in order to empower cocoa house holds the organization offers mothers to train in business skill, in order to increase income. So that children can enter school. This is also helping to improve food security. Other organizations recommend fair trade for companies which make chocolate and sell these products.
We usually think that we should grow more food, but growing food can create pollution. For example, If we grow more food, we have to use more Agricultural chemicals which leads to creating pollution such as flooding, air pollution. The more cooking, the more carbon dioxide we produce. But in Benin in West Africa, Burney tries to use energy of sun power. In India, she has a project to replace traditional cooking stoves with more efficient ones. Cooking stoves release fewer emissions into the air and require less fuel. So, using it is the most effective way to immediately begin slowing climate change.
Burney said “Hunger will not be relieved through one grand, sweeping solution.” So, we must find other solutions and try them, because, we are a world of plenty, yet almost a billion people don’t have enough to eat. What can we do? For example, learning all we can about how and where food is raised, researching local community, and getting the fact by asking how much the garden typically produces and so on. I think that there are many things we should do for food problems. We must put on knowledge and we must take a positive attitude for food problems.
